Covid-19: Men in 20-49 age group make up most cases

DHARWAD: Men in the 20-49 years age group make up a huge chunk of those infected by the SARS-Cov2 virus, a study by JSS Institute of Economic Research and Population Research Centre, Dharwad, shows.
Jyoti Hallad, director of the institute, said an analysis of background characteristics of 67,420 Covid-19 cases in Karnataka between March 10 and July 20, reveal 63% of them were men, while the remaining 37% were women.
Of those infected, the proportion of men in the 30-59 age group was high (65%- 68%), while about 23% fell in the 30-39 years age group, 21% in the 20-29 age group and 18% in the 40-49 age group.
Hallad said districtwise analysis shows more women in Haveri, Davanagere, Gadag, Kodagu, Yadgir and Uttara Kannada districts were infected compared to districts like Chitradurga, Koppal, Tumakuru, Dakshina Kannada, Mysuru, Ballari, Chikkamagaluru and Udupi.
Agewise analysis of district data shows positive cases were substantially higher in the 60+ category in Davanagere, Bengaluru Urban and Belagavi, whereas the number of youngsters (up to 19 years) who contracted the infection was high in Yadgir, Kalaburagi, Raichur, Uttara Kannada and Bidar districts.
As for the source of infection, Hallad said 9% of cases were migrants or returnees from Maharashtra and 3% were returnees from other states.
Nearly 15% contracted the virus through contact with another positive patient, 17% were ILI cases and 3% were SARI cases. The source could not be traced in 50% of cases. Of the returnees from other states, 11% were men and 12% women.
Yadgir, Udupi, Kalaburagi, Mandya, Raichur, Chikkaballapura and Hassan districts had the most number of returnees infected, while Bengaluru Rural, Chitradurga, Dharwad, Kolar and Koppal districts had a higher proportion of ILI and SARI cases.
