The police handed out approximately 200 masks along the Brian Lara Promenade to the homeless as well as members of the public, between Chacon Street and Duncan Street, on Thursday.

TTPS event manager Lisa Ghany said “The intention was to give out masks to the homeless and people who did not have masks, but the public were also part of the exercise. We didn’t segregate, people who asked for masks and we were able to give them, we did so.”

She said four officers, along with members of the police corporate communications department, carried out the project. She said the masks given out were donated to the I Support Our Service campaign by the NGO Sewa International TT.

Ghany explained, “These are reusable masks made in TT. They have two linings and are easy to wash and wear. The officers assisted people who wanted to know how to put them on properly. People were grateful to receive them along with the instructions on how they should be worn properly.”

She said especially with regard to the homeless, there would be a need to follow up.

“If they are living on the street, they don’t all have access to sanitary conditions that would allow them to wash their masks on a regular basis. It may mean that we would have to check on them from time to time to see if in the future we could redistribute, according to the supplies we have.”
