Representative imagePUNE: The Khadki police arrested a 37-year-old Dattawadi resident after his wife (30) lodged a complaint accusing him of pushing her from the Sangam bridge near the RTO in a bid to kill her, during a quarrel on Monday evening.
A lifeguard and a few police persons, who were manning the river bank, spotted the woman — Basamma Kumbhar — falling from the bridge. She fell in a muddy area below and suffered fractures on her backbone and legs, police said. Basamma lodged a complaint on Monday night following which her husband, Nagappa Shivappa Kumbhar, was arrested.
Probe revealed that the couple had been married for eight years and would quarrel frequently. “The woman survived nearly a 45-feet fall,” said PS Devkar of Khadki police station.
Devkar said, “On Monday morning, they quarrelled, following which the wife left the house with their four-year-old daughter. She was walking towards Wakdewadi to board a state transport bus, when her husband tracked her down near Sangam bridge and started another quarrel. In a fit of rage, the man pushed her off the bridge.”
