JEE (Mains) 2020: Attendance near normal for Paper 1, small dip for Paper 2
NEW DELHI: Putting to rest speculations on low attendance for the Joint Entrance Examination (Mains), the National Testing Agency stated the attendance for Paper 2 for BArch/B Planning admission was 54.7% and that for Paper 1 for BTech/BE admissions has been 81.6%. The computer based tests commenced from September 1.
Paper 2 is to test the aspirants for BArch/B Planning courses which were conducted over two shifts on the first day. Paper 1, to test the aspirants for BTech/BE courses, are being conducted for the subsequent days till September 6, each day having two shifts.
A total of 1,12,247 candidates registered for Paper 2, of which 61,366 finally took the test, which is significantly lower from the usual 75% to 80%.
However, attendance percentage in the Paper 1 for the BTech/ BE admissions have been close to previous tests. Of the 3,46,372 candidates registered for Wednesday and Thursday’s tests, 2,82,592 aspirants took the tests over four shifts. While the overall attendance recorded was 81.6% for this paper, according to NTA officials the tests usually record between 85% to 90% attendance. A total of 8.6 lakh candidates have registered for Paper 1.
According to a senior NTA official, “While majority of the states recorded more than 65% attendance for Paper 2, there were a few states where the attendance was low. These include states where the state entrance exams are over and counselling and allocation of seats are underway.”
The dip in the attendance has been attributed to multiple reasons by NTA officials, which include delay in the tests (the exams have been postponed twice) and due to completion of many of the state entrance examinations for engineering courses, some of which have even started allotment of seats.
“There are multiple reasons for the marginal dip in the attendance. The delay in the JEE (main) is one reason as many states have completed their entrance exams and some are scheduled for September. In fact, counselling and allocation of seats have also started. Many students have also joined private engineering colleges. Therefore, instead of around 85% to 90% attendance for the Paper 1, so far the attendance has been a little more than 81%,” said Vineet Joshi, director general, NTA.
West Bengal declared the results of its entrance on August 7 and counselling is underway. Maharashtra too conducted its exams between July 4 to 14, July 28 to 31 and August 3 to 5. Kerala conducted its engineering entrance test on July 16, while Gujarat on August 24 (counselling underway). Karnataka conducted its exams on July 30 and 31 and declared the results on August 21. Private engineering colleges like the Vellore Institute of Technology had declared its rank list on August 5 and counselling started from August 10.
