Since the introduction of the Mk1 in 1976, Volkswagen has sold more than 2.3 million units of the Golf GTI, and now the latest version has become available in Europe where the order books have just opened.

While we’ll have to wait until the end of next (!) year to see the new-generation of the golden standard of hot hatches in North America as a 2022MY, in Germany, you can get one with prices starting at €37,607.38 (equal to $44,622) for the DSG-equipped model.

“For over four decades, the three letters GTI have stood for sporty driving pleasure and technology at the highest level”, noted the VW Brand Board Member of Management responsible for Sales, Jurgen Stackmann. “We thank our customers for 2.3 million Golf GTIs sold. The new GTI is full of innovation. It too will set new standards and thrill our customers.”

Powering Volkswagen’s Renault Megane RS and Ford Focus ST rival is a  turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. It produces 245 PS (242 HP / 180 kW) and 370 Nm (273 lb-ft) of torque, directed to the front axle through a six-speed manual or seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, enabling a 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) acceleration of 6+ seconds and a 250 km/h (155 mph) electronically limited top speed.

The Golf GTI boasts sportier looks than the rest of the lineup, though the design is anything but aggressive. In fact, the optional X-shaped fog lights are probably the most defining features of the compact hot hatch, alongside the different rear bumper, extended roof spoiler, two rounded exhaust pipes and GTI emblems.

The signature tartan upholstery is still on deck, while the rest of the cockpit is very well equipped, with standard digital gauges and Discover Media infotainment system, or optional 10-inch Discover Pro. The Autonomous Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Monitoring, Lane Assist, Car2X communication tech and others are also included.
