Family problems leading cause of suicides in Assam: NCRB

GUWAHATI: Family problems have emerged as the leading cause of suicides in Assam where a total of 2,370 people killed themselves during 2019, says the latest National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report. Altogether 2,379 people had died due by suicide in 2018.
The report shows that family problems accounted for 25.94% of total suicides in Assam in 2019, love affairs (15.69%), property dispute (11.77%) and marriage-related issues (10.21%). The other causes are drug abuse or addiction (3.8%), illness (6.6%) unemployment 6.54 %, poverty (3.92%) and failure in examination (4.3%).
The report, which was released on Monday, revealed that the rate of suicide is 6.9 in Assam, while the national average of the rate is 10.4. Suicide rate means number of suicides per one lakh population.
However, mental health experts say Assam being below the national average does not necessarily mean that the state is in a safe spot.
