US Open 2020 Round 2, Sumit Nagal vs Dominic Thiem Tennis Live Score: Sumit Nagal does not expect to dominate World No. 3 Dominic Thiem like his near namesake and idol Rafa Nadal when they meet in the US Open second round on Thursday, but the 23-year-old Indian is relishing the challenge on the biggest stage.
Nagal became the first Indian to win a singles match at the US Open in seven years after Somdev Devvarman when he beat Bradley Klahn and immediately set his sights on Thiem who has reached two French Open finals, losing both to Nadal.
Nagal gets on the scoreboard. Holds serve without too much effort as play restarts after the break. Rohan Bopanna seen on the sidelines of Arthur Ashe, presumably to cheer on the 23-year-old. Nagal puts up much more fight in the next game as well, drawing Thiem into some long rallies. And Nagal has roared back! Brings up a break point for himself with a strong forehand that Thiem can't stop. Thiem comes up with an ace to go to take us the Deuce. Nagal, covering a lot of the court, brings up break point after break point, with Thiem faltering on the forehand. And after 10 minutes of a gruelling game, Nagal has broken back!
Thiem fires an ace to finish off the third game, going into the first break of the match with a 3-0 lead. Nagal has been unable to make a mark yet, his two double faults being costly on his serve. Can he make a comeback in the first set?
Nagal gets a sense of how difficult this match could be as he has to stave off a break point on his first serve in the match. Nagal then gives a second break point to Thiem as he commits a double fault. Does well to hit a forehand winner and wriggle his way out. And another double fault from him! What an erratic start from the Indian. Thiem goes 2-0 up.
Thiem serves first. Nagal gets the first point of the match as Thiem goes long with a forehand. Thiem gets his first point after that with a cross court forehand. And takes the next three points to close out the first game 1-0. A great start from Thiem. Nagal covering a lot of lateral ground as well.
'Last year I had a good match here. Looking forward to another great opportunity. The crowd not being there might favour me more than Dominic. He brings a lot of energy on court and has made it into a few Slam finals. It's not going to be easy for me,' says Nagal as he steps out. Nagal took the first set against Federer in the 1st round last year. This is the first time he is into the 2nd round of a Slam. Can he continue his historic run?
Action time in men's singles on Arthur Ashe now. The first match of the day on the main court is done. Now for a quite a rare moment for India, Sumit Nagal will step on to the main court for a showdown against Dominic Thiem, one of the sport's champions in waiting. The big match to begin in a few more minutes.
The Aussie Open champ Sofia Kenin takes out 17-year-old Flag of Canada Leylah Fernandez 6-4 6-3. Won 76% 1st serve pts.Time for Sumit to take the big stage now.
Currently, Kevin vs Fernandez in the women's singles second round is taking place at the Arthur Ashe Stadium. Down a set and a break in the second, Fernandez is probably not going to win against Kenin today.
In a display of composure, determination, patience and skill, Nagal registered a 6-1, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 win over American Bradley Klahn. With the win, he secured a second-round match against World No. 3 Dominic Thiem on Thursday. Nagal’s win brings to an end a seven-year wait to see an Indian singles player in the second round of a Grand Slam.
“It was very emotional for me. I had been waiting for this,” he says, putting into perspective what the win meant to him. “I had a lot of injuries in my career which pushed me back, and I blame myself for it a lot. And today, after winning my first round, I could finally smile .”
