Odisha govt urges UGC to extend UG, PG final exams deadline

BHUBANESWAR: The state government on Wednesday requested the University Grants Commission (UGC) to extend the deadline of September 30 to October 10 for completion of all undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) final semester/year examinations.
Higher education minister Arun Kumar Sahoo tweeted this on Wednesday. "This will ensure conduct of examinations with adequate precautions as per Covid-19 protocol. Final examinations shall be held between September 20 and October 10. Result shall be published by October 31," he stated in his tweets.
Higher education department secretary Saswat Mishra in his letter to UGC secretary stated that preparedness to conduct the examination was discussed with university vice-chancellors and principals of autonomous colleges on August 31 through video conferencing. "All of them said that as they had earlier not planned to conduct final semester/year UG and PG examinations, about 20 days time would be required to make necessary preparation for conducting the examination. Conduct of the examination can commence from September 20," he added.
Secondly, multiple examinations (subject wise and paper wise) need to be slotted on all days till September 30 in order to complete the examinations by September 30. "Conducting multiple examinations on a single day would lead to congregation of a large number of students in the examination centre, which will make compliance of covid-19 prevention protocol difficult," read the letter.
The department stated that conducting examinations on everyday, without any gap, will also lead to universities and colleges not getting enough time to sanitize and disinfect the examination centres before next day of examination. All vice-chancellors and principals have requested for extension of the September 30 deadline by 10 days up to October 10.
The state government had taken a decision in June to cancel all final semester/year UG and PG examinations of universities and colleges. But the UGC's revised guidelines issued on July 6 had stipulated that these final examinations must be compulsorily held by September 30.The Supreme Court has also upheld this revised guidelines. It has also granted liberty to the states to make an application to UGC for extending the dateline if situation demands.
