COIMBATORE: Coimbatore district recorded 579 fresh
Covid-19 cases on Wednesday. With these, the the total number of cases reached 16,662 cases.
The number of
patients under treatment rose to an all-time high of 4,269. Only 217 people got discharged on Wednesday.
Five more deaths were recorded taking the death toll to 315.
So far 12,078 people have recovered from the illness so far, pointing to a recovery rate of 72.4%.
Of the 579 cases, 10 of them were from Selvapuram, two from Ashok Nagar and five from Telungupalayam. However, a majority of the cases seemed to have come from the western parts of the city-- including Vadavalli which recorded 11 new cases, one case from P N Pudur, one from Thillai Nagar and at least four cases from R S Puram -- including one each from the Periyasamy Road, the Ponnurangam Road and the Central Studio Road.
Gandhipuram saw four new cases, Peelamedu six new cases and Race Course saw four new cases.
Outside city limits, at least 16 cases were from Perur and the Perur Chettipalayam Stretch, including a few from Siruvani Main Road, nine cases were from Mettupalayam and several from all the other areas.
The remaining 500-odd cases were spread across the city and district. With the number of active cases increasing, officials are racing against time to add 3,000 beds to covid care centres, including adding a few hundred beds to the covid care facility in Madhampalayam.
“We are now bracing for a possibility of the city seeing nearly 800 new cases a day. If the number of active cases goes beyond 6,000, we will advise all asymptomatic and mildly symptomatic patients to opt for home isolation or isolation within their quarters,” said an official.
The number of samples being tested had also been increased to 5,800 samples a day, said deputy director of public health, Dr G Ramesh Kumar.
