What is a special frontier force?

The SFF i.e. Special Frontier Force was formed soon after the India-China war in 1962. It was a sort of secret force, which included Tibetan soldiers at the time. Although it now includes Tibetans and Gurkhas, in the early times this force was known as 22 Regiment (Tutu Regiment).

It was called 22 because Major General Sujan Singh Uban brought it into the role of SFF and was an artillery officer of 22 Mountain Regiment. This force now works under the Cabinet Secretariat. The force is headed by an IG, who is posted at the rank of Major General of the Indian Army. It is also known as Vikas Battalion.

Is this force a part of the Indian Army?

It is a bit strange to hear and understand that SFF is not a part of the Indian Army but works under the Army's Operation Control, although this is true. This unit has its own rank and its rank is equal to the rank of the army. This regiment still works in a very secretive manner.

They have separate training institutes, where special forces are trained to join this force. Frontier force personnel are trained special forces personnel, who are capable of doing different types of work. Women also form part of the SFF unit. Its soldiers are trained as the 'Green Beret' of the US Army.
