Rowdy Sankar death in Chennai police encounter: Case transferred to CB-CID

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu director general of police J K Tripathy has ordered transfer of inquiries into the death of drug peddler Sankar alias ‘Ilaneer’ Sankar to the CB-CID.
Sankar was shot dead by police at Ayanavaram in Chennai on August 1 when he tried to escape after attacking a policeman. Ayanavaram police inspector Nataraj opened fire on the rowdy thrice, killing him.
Sankar’s family members alleged that it was ‘a premeditated murder.’
Following the allegation, city police commissioner Mahesh Kumar Aggarwal recommended transfer of the case to the CB-CID.
Based on the recommendations of Aggarwal, the DGP issued the order on Tuesday.
A magisterial inquiry into the case is also under way.
Sankar was involved in three murders, four attempts to murder and 51 hurt and extortion cases, police said.
