Chhattisgarh records 837 fresh cases; 12 deaths
Chhattisgarh's COVID-19 tally rose to 36,520 on Thursday with the addition of 837 new cases, while the death toll climbed to 312 after 12 patients succumbed to the infection, a health official said. As many as 730 people were discharged from various hospitals following their recovery, the official said. With this, the state has recorded 18,950 recoveries, and now has 17,258 active cases, he said.

Dharchula, Jauljibi in U'khand under self-imposed lockdown
Dharchula and Jauljibi towns and 50 neighbouring gram panchayats in Uttarakhand's Pithoragarh have gone for a self-imposed lockdown as a precautionary measure after 62 army and paramilitary personnel deployed on the Indo-China and Indo-Nepal borders tested COVID-19 positive last week. Markets in these towns and 50 gram panchayats closed down after trade bodies called for a lockdown from Wednesday till Sunday.

Kerala records 1,553 new cases
Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan said on Thursday the situation in the state was "not good", as 1,553 new Covid-19 cases and 10 fatalities were reported taking the infection count to 79,624 and death toll to 315. The number of active cases is 21,516. "The situation in the state is not good.There is a slip in the number of people getting infected with the virus in the last two days.It is due to the less number of tests carried out during the Onam festival holidays," he told reporters.
Punjab reports 73 more deaths
Seventy-three more COVID-19 deaths in Punjab pushed the toll to 1,690 while 1,527 new cases took the state's infection tally to 58,515 on Thursday, according to an official bulletin. There are 15,554 active coronavirus cases in the state now, it said. Eighteen coronavirus fatalities were reported from Ludhiana, ten from Kapurthala, seven from Jalandhar and five each from Patiala, Ferozepur and Moga, the bulletin said.
Government defends opening up of economic activities amid rising Covid cases
Secretary in the health ministry Rajesh Bhushan underscored that prior to graded opening of economic activities in the country, the government ensured all prerequisites such as adequate testing capacity, clear-cut guidelines of standard clinical treatment protocol, enhanced hospital infrastructure, adequate intensive care unit beds and beds with oxygen facility.

The Supreme Court is scheduled to consider on Friday a plea of ministers of six opposition-ruled states seeking review of its August 17 order allowing holding of NEET and JEE exams physically. The ministers had claimed that the top court order failed to secure students' "right to life" and ignored "teething logistical difficulties" to be faced in conducting the exams during the Covid-19 pandemic.
