After a sharp fall on Monday, fresh Covid-19 cases in India again crossed 80,000 on Tuesday, registering the second highest daily count so far. The number of deaths recorded in the country too rose beyond 1,000 after a gap of three days. The first day of September saw 80,024 new coronavirus infections, taking the total caseload in the country to 37,62,063, as per data collated from state governments till 11.30pm on Tuesday. The day’s fatalities were recorded at 1,021. In another grim milestone, the number of active cases in the country crossed 8 lakh, having risen from the 7-lakh mark in 11 days. It had taken 15 days for active cases to rise from 6 lakh to 7 lakh. There has been a spurt in active cases in the past week in conjunction with the spike in fresh cases. India has the second biggest pool of active cases in the world after the US. Only three countries -- US, Brazil and Russia -- have a higher count of total cases than the number of active cases in India. Last week, daily cases had remained above 76,000 for five straight days, with infections peaking on Sunday, when 80,092 cases were recorded, as per TOI’s data collated from state governments. This was the biggest spike in infections recorded in a week anywhere in the world since the outbreak of the pandemic.
