Chennai: Auto driver kills himself after police assault, allege relatives

CHENNAI: A 45-year-old autorickshaw driver committed suicide at his house in Thoraipakkam after being harassed by police, alleged his relatives.
Rajendran's relatives who gathered outside Kannagi Nagar police station on Tuesday were pacified by officers.
Police said during an investigation into an assault case they found that Rajendran helped a few suspects in the case escape on Monday. A team led by an inspector from the police station allegedly slapped Rajendran during questioning. Dejected, Rajendran drank alcohol on Monday evening and went to the police station to meet the inspector.
However, he was asked to come on Tuesday as he was drunk. On Tuesday, police were informed that Rajendran hanged himself at his house. Police said they have CCTV footage as evidence as to what happened between Rajendran and police and there was no issue. A case has been registered and further investigation is on.
