Portion of dilapidated building collapses in Mumbai's Dongri area

MUMBAI: Portion of a building collapsed in Mumbai's Dongri area on Wednesday morning at around 7.30am. A woman, retired school teacher, is said to be trapped under the debris. The firemen are trying to locate and rescue her.
The Razak Chamber building, old dilapidated cessed structure situated off SVB road, had developed a major crack on Tuesday after which most of its residents vacated the premises on the same night. The Mhada had examined the structure on Tuesday and was supposed to start the repair work from today.

The woman was staying alone in the building and she was to vacate her premises today morning but the structure collapsed trapping her.
"The building has two wings with separate entries. The staircase portion of one wing collapsed and a woman staying in the building got trapped inside," said Javed Juneza, local corporator.
It is the second serious incident in the vicinity of congested Dongri-Nagpada area that have several old dilapidated structures.
Last week, a septuagenarian and her 12-year-old granddaughter were killed after a portion of a three-storey dilapidated building collapsed on their house near Nagpada. The toilet block portion of Mishra building, a cessed building on Shuklaji Street, was being repaired when it came crashing down on a house in the compound. Noor Qureshi (70) and her granddaughter Aliya, who were inside the house, got trapped under the debris. Firemen rescued the two from under the rubble after a four-hour struggle and rushed them to hospital, but they were declared dead, said officials.
