Lionel Messi has made it clear that he wants to leave Barcelona and join Manchester City.

The Argentine rocked Barcelona last month when his lawyers told the club he wanted to activate a clause in his contract that would allow him to leave for free before the 2020-21 season.

The club disputed the claim saying the clause expired on June 10 -- with La Liga also releasing a statement saying his contract was still valid -- but club's presidential candidate Victor  Font is not optimistic about convincing Messi to stay another year.

And while the 33-year-old was the top scorer in La Liga last season is eager to work under Pep Guardiola once again.

However, signing Messi will not be easy, with the six Ballon d'Or awards winner still having one-year left on his current contract at Barcelona with a release clause of 700 million euros.

City's hope is that Messi's camp can negotiate a deal which would see him leave the Camp Nou on a free transfer.
