- He left his home at about 22:00 on Monday to meet his wife when he was shot and killed by unknown assailants.
- Over the weekend, a sergeant was shot and killed in his car in Bethelsdorp.
A 36-year-old police officer's body was found with bullet wounds in Port St Johns on Tuesday, a few days after a sergeant was shot and killed just outside Port Elizabeth over the weekend.
According to Eastern Cape police, Constable Bathembu Mabhududu was murdered at about 06:00 in the morning in Tombo A/A Gheto locality, while he was off duty.
"According to information, he left his home last night [Monday] at about 22:00 to meet his wife at her rented room, when he was shot and killed by unknown assailants," police spokesperson Brigadier Thembinkosi Kinana said.
"He sustained multiple wounds to his body," added Kinana.
Mabhududu's murder comes soon after another Eastern Cape police officer, Sergeant De Porres Leonard Frieslaar's murder.
Frieslaar was found with a bullet wound to the head inside his Suzuki Celerio in Bethelsdorp, just outside Port Elizabeth, on Saturday night. He was 37 years old.
The motive for the killings are still unknown at this point, and no arrests have been made.
Lieutenant General Liziwe Ntshinga said that an attack on or murder of a police official was a threat to the country's constitutional democracy and robbed communities of their protectors.
"This should not be taken lightly by anyone," added Ntshinga.
Anyone with information which could lead to an arrest was urged to contact investigating officer Detective Captain Bongani Ngxola on 082 300 2861.
