2,734 new coronavirus cases in Telangana; 9 more deaths

  • Telangana posted 2,734 new COVID-19 cases and 9 related fatalities, taking the tally of those infected by the virus in the state to 1.27 lakh.
  • With nine more deaths, the toll rose to 836. The case fatality rate in the state was 0.66 per cent, while it was 1.77 per cent at the national level.
  • The total number of people who have recovered from COVID-19 so far stood at 95,162 while 31,699 are under treatment. The recovery rate in Telangana was 74.5 per cent, while it was 76.94 per cent in the country.

JEE (Main) begins today amid stringent Covid precautions

  • Postponed twice due to the pandemic, the Joint Entrance Examination (Main) for admission to top engineering colleges in the country will commence with unprecedented preparations from Tuesday.
  • About 9.58 lakh aspirants have registered for the exam to be conducted from September 1-6 across 660 testing centres. While Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh governments have assured the aspirants free transportation, a group of IIT alumni and students have launched a portal to provide transport facility to exam centres for needy aspirants. Ramesh Pokhriyal, Union minister of education, has appealed to chief ministers to support the candidates.

  • Hong Kong began a voluntary mass-testing programme for coronavirus on Tuesday as part of a strategy to break the chain of transmission in the city's third outbreak of the disease.
  • The virus-testing programme has become a flashpoint of political debate in Hong Kong, with many distrustful over resources and staff being provided by the China's central government and fears that the residents' DNA could be collected during the exercise.

China reports 10 new COVID-19 cases, over 30 more asymptomatic carriers confirmed

  • China has registered 10 new coronavirus cases in the past 24 hours, and all of them have been imported, while another 31 COVID-19 patients have recovered over that period, the country's National Health Commission said on Tuesday.
  • China's total number of confirmed coronavirus cases now stands at 85,058 and the death toll is 4,634. The total number of imported cases is 2,509.

Jubilant Life Sciences seeks nod to roll out Remdesivir tablet

  • Remdesivir is an antiviral drug which is being used to treat Covid-19 patients, is currently administered intravenously.
  • Noida-based Jubilant Life Sciences has sought permission of the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) to launch remdesivir in a tablet form. In a meeting held on August 25, the company had presented its proposal to the DCGI.
  • According to the proposal, the company is exploring the possibility of launching 20 mg sublingual tablets. Sublingual administration involves placing a drug under the tongue so that it gets dissolved and absorbed into the blood through the tissues.

Hospitalised Tarun Gogoi's oxygen saturation dips, given plasma therapy

  • A sudden fall in oxygen saturation of former chief minister Tarun Gogoi, who is undergoing treatment after testing positive for coronavirus, occurred at 11:30 pm on Monday, according to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
  • The former CM is admitted to the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH).
  • Sarma further said that the team of doctors supervising Gogoi had decided to administer a unit of plasma and two liters of oxygen, following which his oxygen saturation "is maintained between 96 to 97 per cent."

J-K administration issues new classification of districts for implementing lockdown from today

  • The Jammu and Kashmir administration issued new COVID-19 classification of districts in the Union Territory into red, orange and green categories for the purpose of implementing the lockdown, with effect from September 1.
  • According to the order issued by the State Executive Committee, Department of Disaster Management, Relief Rehabilitation and Reconstruction, all districts of Kashmir province except Bandipora are in the Red category. The only district from Jammu province which comes in the Red category is Ramban.
  • Kathua, Samba, Bandipora, Reasi, Udhampur, Poonch, Rajouri and Jammu are in the Orange category, while Doda and Kishtwar are in Green, according to the new classification.

All govt departments in Bhubaneswar, Cuttack to function at 50% strength

  • All state government departments and sub-ordinate offices in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack will function with 50 per cent strength during September while ensuring that office work does not suffer.
  • All state government offices across Odisha will also remain closed on Saturdays, according to an order issued by the General Administration and Public Grievance Department, which has been taken in view of the COVID-19 situation in the state.

Andhra govt's unique solution to provide real time updates to kin of hospitalised COVID patients

  • The Andhra Pradesh government has devised a unique solution to put at the ease relatives of novel coronavirus patients admitted in COVID wards for treatment.
  • According to the new plan, a relative of the patient will get real-time updates about the health status of the patient.
  • Every time a doctor visits a patient, he will update the vitals and other important information, the software is programmed to reflect the patient as either stable or unstable which will be sent to the relative of the patient as a message.

AstraZeneca's vaccine has reached Phase 3 clinical trials in US: Trump

  • US President Donald Trump on Monday announced AstraZeneca's COVID-19 vaccine has reached Phase 3 clinical trials in the United States and is very close to being finalised for approval.
  • Trump said that process could have taken years but his administration did in a matter of months.
  • AstraZeneca also announced that its vaccine, developed by researchers at Oxford University will enrol approximately 30,000 adult volunteers at 80 sites in the US.

  • COVID-19 testing will not be mandatory for all those wishing to enter Goa from September 1 and the bars-restaurants can open although they will have to follow MHA guidelines, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said.
  • "From September 1, Unlock 4 has started, earlier testing was compulsory for those willing to enter Goa. But now it will not be mandatory, if someone is found symptomatic then the person can get tested in the state. There is also no restriction on inter-state movement of people, vehicles," Sawant told ANI here.

  • India is the hardest-hit nation by coronavirus disease in Asia and is currently accounting for 30 per cent of the daily reported new COVID-19 cases and 20 per cent of daily deaths globally. However, a country-wide peak may still be some distance away, experts from Indian Public Health Association (IPHA) said.
  • In a third joint statement on COVID-19 pandemic in India, a task force of eminent public health experts have opined that cumulative recoveries in India are an impressive 2.3 million, and the corrected case fatality ratio (CCFR) is steadily declining.

Bengal's COVID-19 discharge rate improves to 82.49 per cent

  • The discharge rate of COVID-19 patients in West Bengal rose to 82.49 per cent after 3,318 patients recovered from the disease on Monday, a bulletin released by the health department said.
  • On Sunday, the discharge rate was close to 82 per cent. So far, 1,34,270 people have recovered from the disease in the state.
  • The state's coronavirus caseload went up to 1,62,778 as 2,993 new cases of infection were registered in the state on Monday.
