WhatsApp may update this Android app after 9 years
Reports last month claimed that WhatsApp is working on improving wallpaper support for iPhone users. New information suggests that the company may bring similar wallpaper features for Android smartphone users as well. And one specific change that this may bring for Android users is: WhatsApp updating an Android app after 9 years.

As per WABetaInfo, Android beta update — version 2.20.199.5 — of WhatsApp may soon allow Android users to choose wallpaper for their chats. “The new Wallpaper feature will allow to choose a different wallpaper based on the theme used in WhatsApp,” says WABetaInfo, the website that tracks the upcoming changes to WhatsApp.

It further adds that when users choose a default wallpaper, WhatsApp will also ask them if they want to download the WhatsApp Wallpaper app. This is the official WhatsApp application that provides wallpapers. And as per Google Play Store listing this app was last updated nine years ago. The last update date of the app is May 24, 2011, as per the listing.

Incidentally, the app has over 100 million downloads which shows its popularity. Also, WhatsApp seems to have not launched the app on Apple App Store, as we could not find the app on iPhone maker’s app store.

As per the listing details on Google Play Store, to use the wallpapers users need to install and launch WhatsApp Messenger, start a conversation with a friend; and choose Menu > WallPaper > WhatsApp. As for OS support, it says it requires Android 2.1 and above.

These details itself suggest that the instant messaging app giant badly needs to up date the app.
