Based on a specific tip, police tried to arrest rowdy Suryah, a resident of Nedunkundram, when he came to a BJP function in the area, allegedly to join the party in front of state unit L Murugan. A sword hidden inside a car parked near the venue was recovered. Police registered a case under Section 41 (any police officer may without an order from a magistrate and without a warrant arrest any person) of CrPC, 1973 against the four and let them go after taking an undertaking from them. Police have collected the video recording of the event to confirm the presence of Suryah.
Addressing reporters later, Murugan said , “I am not aware of the background of every person approaching to join the party.” He then hurriedly left the venue when journalists started asking him more about the issue. Earlier, notorious rowdy ‘Kalvettu’ Ravi of north Chennai joined the party. Ravi was involved in more than 36 cases including six murders. The issue created a lot of flutter.
Inquiries revealed that since Murugan didn’t attend a marriage in the family of party functionary Natarajan of Otteri, the latter organised another function at a community hall near his house. Party workers planned to make it a bigger event and enrol new members in front Murugan. This led to the participation of Suryah.
