GREATER NOIDA: Residents of Rabupura’s Janchana village allegedly fought over a statue of BR Ambedkar and stopped development work by GNIDA on Monday, said officials.
The incident broke out when a few men, appointed by the GNIDA, were working on a road and drains in the village. The complaint stated that the villagers tried to “manipulate” the workers into removing the statue by saying that it is situated at the site where the drain was to be built.
The police came to the spot and tried to pacify the crowd. Next, 15 locals signed a complaint, demanding arrests of six people, including a woman.
Ganga Saran, a complainant, said the accused are goons — who were earlier booked in cases of rioting here. He said there is already a drain in the area but the accused were asking the workers to build a new one alongside the boundary wall of a small park where the statue was built.
“They wanted the statue to be removed,” he said.
The police assured the locals that the statue will be protected. However, they filed no FIR in the case saying that two parties are from the same community and the construction work had nothing to do with the statue.
