Another part of historian Prof George Mark Moraes’ house in Cuncolim collapsed on Tuesday morning, after rains had caused another portion of the house to collapse in July this year.
Residents in the area said another portion of the heritage house had collapsed early on Tuesday morning near the Bencleamvaddo Chapel. “Early on Tuesday morning, we heard a sound and saw that it was Prof George Moraes’ old house that had collapsed. The municipality had put a notice on the house declaring it as an unsafe structure two years ago. In July also there was another part of the house that had come down crashing. Such buildings are a danger to the lives of the public,” said a resident and ward councillor Mario
Moraes.
The Cuncolim Municipal Council (CMC) had at the time of declaring it an unsafe structure also expressed intentions of acquiring the area to setup a children’s park in memory of the historian. A library has already been setup by the residents of the area a few meters away from the house. Professor Moraes was a Ph.D in English and had served as professor at St Xavier’s College, Bombay.
