South Africa's Lloyd Harris sailed into the US Open second round with a straight-sets victory over Italy's Marco Cecchinato at Flushing Meadows on Monday.
The South African No 1 won 6-4, 7-5, 6-2 in one hour and 54 minutes to reach the second round of the US Open for the first time.
Harris, the world No 95, fired 12 aces compared to 108th-ranked Cecchinato's three and also hit 32 winners to his opponent's 14.
The Italian is famous for reaching the 2018 French Open semi-finals where he beat Serbia's Novak Djokovic in the last eight.
With this victory, Harris matched his best effort at a Grand Slam, having also reached the second round of the 2019 French Open.
He now faces a tough second round encounter against Belgian seventh seed David Goffin, who beat 6ft 11in American Reilly Opelka 7-6 (7/2), 3-6, 6-1, 6-4.
Meanwhile, South Africa's other contestant in the men's singles, Kevin Anderson, bowed out after losing in four sets to German fifth seed Alexander Zverev.
South Africa's doubles star, Raven Klaasen, and his Austrian partner Oliver Marach are the seventh seeds and will open their account against the unseeded pair of Philipp Oswald (Austria) and Marcus Daniell (New Zealand) on Wednesday.
