  • The COVID-19 caseload of Andaman and Nicobar Islands rose to 3,104 as 23 more people tested positive for the infection, while one more fatality pushed the Union territory's coronavirus death toll to 45, a health department official said on Monday.
  • Nineteen fresh infections were detected during contact tracing, while four persons were found positive after arrival at the airport, he said.
  • It is mandatory for all passengers coming from the mainland to undergo rapid antigen test at the airport on arrival.

Biggest one-day spike of 157 Covid cases in Arunachal

  • Arunachal Pradesh reported its highest single-day spike of 157 COVID-19 cases, which pushed the tally in the northeastern state to 4,034 on Monday, a senior official here said.
  • Barring 13, all new patients are asymptomatic. "Eight army men, 25 paramilitary personnel, 52 state police personnel and 23 firefighters are among the new patients," State Surveillance Officer Dr L Jampa said.

  • 3 more persons tested positive for COVID-19 in Mizoram, taking the state's tally to 1,011, an official said on Monday.
  • The three cases were reported from Kolasib district, the official said.
  • The newly infected persons were truck drivers, who came from Assam and all of them were asymptomatic, he said.
  • Of the total 1,011 COVID-19 cases, 422 are active cases as 589 people have already recovered from the virus, the official said.

Over dozen new coronavirus cases reported in China

  • China has registered 17 new coronavirus cases in the past 24 hours and all of them have been imported, while another 24 COVID-19 patients have recovered over that period, the country's National Health Commission said on Monday.
  • China's total number of confirmed coronavirus cases now stands at 85,048 and the death toll is 4,634. The total number of recovered individuals in the country stands at 80,177. The total number of imported cases is 2,499.

Preparations on for second phase of human clinical trial of 'Covaxin' vaccine

  • Preparations are underway at a hospital in Bhubaneswar for the commencement of the second phase of human clinical trial of 'Covaxin', India's indigenous COVID-19 vaccine, officials said.
  • "The Phase I of the trial is still continuing as we are planning for the start of the Phase II trial shortly," Dr E Venkata Rao, Principal Investigator of the trial at Institute of Medical Sciences and SUM Hospital, faculty of medical sciences, said.
  • The blood samples collected from the volunteers who received the vaccine were to ascertain how effective the vaccine was in terms of the level of antibodies developed, Dr Rao said, adding that there had been 'no side effects' in the first phase trial of the vaccine.

HM Amit Shah discharged from AIIMS

  • Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who was admitted to the AIIMS on August 18 for post-COVID care, was discharged on Monday morning, sources said.
  • The AIIMS had said in a statement on Saturday that "he has recovered and is likely to be discharged in a short time".
  • On August 2, Shah, 55, had said on Twitter that he had tested positive for COVID-19. He had undergone treatment at Medanta Hospital and was discharged after he tested negative for the disease.
  • He was later admitted to the AIIMS following complaints of fatigue and body ache.

  • Australia recorded its deadliest day of the pandemic on Monday as the government urged hot spot Victoria state to announce its plans to lift a lockdown on the country's second-largest city.
  • Victoria's health department reported 41 deaths from COVID-19 and 73 new infections in the latest 24-hour period.
  • While the deaths were a state and national high, the tally of new infections was Victoria's lowest since 67 new cases were recorded on June 30 in the early weeks of the second wave of the pandemic, which has primarily been concentrated in the state capital, Melbourne.

COVID-hit Mustafa Centre to send back foreign workers

  • Singapore's largest Indian origin hypermarket, Mustafa Centre, on Monday said it will send home its foreign workers, mostly Indian nationals, whose work passes have expired, as its business has been hard hit by the Covid-19 pandemic.
  • The company will also stop paying employees who have not been called to work a "sustenance allowance" - believed to be SGD300 per month - and it urged this group of staff to take on a second job to earn an income, according to media reports on Monday.

3,308 COVID-19 patients recover in Bengal; discharge rate nears 82%

  • The discharge rate of COVID-19 patients in West Bengal rose to 81.9 per cent after 3,308 patients recovered from the disease on Sunday, the health department said.
  • A total of 1,30,952 people have so far been cured of COVID-19 in the state.
  • West Bengal reported 3,019 fresh coronavirus cases on Sunday, pushing the tally to 1,59,785, while the death toll mounted to 3,176 with 50 more fatalities, the department said in a bulletin.

Assam reports 7 more COVID deaths, 1,980 new positive cases

  • Seven more COVID-19 patients died in Assam on Sunday taking the total fatalities to 296, while 1,980 new positive cases pushed the states tally to 1,05,774, Health and Family Welfare Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said.
  • Two deaths each were reported from Kamrup Metropolitan, Golaghat and Chirang districts, while one person died in Cachar.
  • The death rate in the state is currently .28 per cent which is among the lowest in the country, the minister said.

  • As he is a minor, Supreme Court lawyer Alakh Alok Srivastava provided him with the required assistance, after the 17-year-old JEE aspirant requested him to submit his letter to the CJI.

  • The Indian Medical Association on Sunday wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging him for an inclusive National solatium for doctors and their families in the wake of rising deaths of the healthcare workers in the line of COVID-19 duty.
  • "The solatium approved by the national government for their colleagues in government services in all fairness is deserved by the children of these martyrs as well," the association's letter read.
