When veteran players aren’t at practice during the week of roster cuts, that sometimes signals the Patriots are letting go of the veteran player in order to allow him to catch on with another team. In this case, however, we don’t have to sound the alarms.

According to ESPN, Newton has an excused absence from practice on Monday.

The Patriots wrapped up training camp on Sunday. Through the 12 practices, Newton clearly looked like the best quarterback in New England and at this point, he’s expected to start in Week 1 even if Bill Belichick hasn’t announced who the starter is.

According to reports, the Patriots were also missing Damien, Harris, David Andrews, Isaiah Wynn, Beau Allen, Michael Barnett and Michael Jackson at practice. Chase Winovich returned with Devin McCourty and Adrian Philips as limited participants.
