Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu on Sunday stressed the need for a strong grievance redressal mechanism to address the difficulties faced by the elderly. He said that the health system also needs to be developed to meet their needs.

In one of his Facebook posts, he said that senior citizens are stores of knowledge and understanding and we should treat them with respect, affection, hospitality, and affection in old age. He wrote that it is the duty of everyone, including the youth, to take care of the elderly. The trend of old age homes for senior citizens not only reflects the change in society but it also shows the decline in family values.

Naidu said that the current lifestyle, cultural values that have been passed down from generation to generation, is damaging the important role of the joint family system in maintaining the tradition.

He said that we need to re-trust our centuries-old joint family system. There is a sense of social security inside a joint family. Naidu said that children form strong emotional relationships with their grandparents and they are often guided in overcoming difficulties at a difficult time. The elders of the family get love and respect from the elders in return.

He said that it is the collective view of society as a whole, which matters the most. People need to give the right value to their children and young people to ensure that the elderly live a comfortable, happy, and contented life.

The Vice President said that the number of elderly people is increasing faster than the population in general and by 2050, India's elderly population will be 20 percent. He said that many elders in India live alone or depend on their children for their financial and emotional needs.
