How to reactivate an NPS account
National Pension System (NPS) subscribers are required to contribute a minimum of Rs 1,000 every financial year. The minimum deposit amount is Rs 500. If the subscriber fails to make the required contribution, the account and PRAN (Permanent Retirement Account Number) are designated as ‘freezed’. Here is how one can reactivate a ‘freezed’ NPS account.
Application
The specified form by NPS for the purpose of unfreezing PRAN is Form UOS-S10-A. The form can be obtained from the bank or post office where the NPS account is being maintained. Alternatively one can download the same on this link: https://npscra.nsdl.co.in/download/non-government-sector/allcitizens-of-india/forms/UoS-S10AUnfreezing%20of%20PRAN.pdf
Documents
A copy of the subscriber’s PRAN card must be enclosed along with the form.
Contribution
To unfreeze an account, the subscriber must make a contribution:
- For regular NPS account: Rs 500 for the current financial year plus penalty of Rs 100 for each year of freeze.
- For Swavalamban accounts: Rs 500 for the current financial year plus penalty of Rs 25 for each year of freeze.
Verification
Once the application is submitted, the authorities verify whether the contribution accepted is greater than the minimum amount prescribed to keep the account active. If the amount is found in order, the application is processed and the PRAN is activated.
Point to note
- Keep the acknowledgement slip signed by the accepting authority after application submission.
- Nominal transaction charges may be levied by the bank or post office along with a service charge levied by the CRA (Central Recordkeeping Authority) as applicable for a contribution transaction.
