Social media was flooded with messages wishing Onam on Monday but it was a tweet by Sachin Tendulkar marking the occasion that got the most attention on Twitter.

The annual harvest festival of Kerala known as Onam is being celebrated with zeal and enthusiasm in the state. The festival falls in the month of August and September.

For the year 2020, the Onam celebrations began on August 22 and the ends on August 31.

Gigantic banana leaves, fresh flower decorations, power-packed boat races are some of the best highlights of the occasion. As foodies relish the delicacies of the festivities, wishes from corners of India poured on social media to spread happiness across.

One such greeting came from batting legend and former cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, who took to his Twitter account on Monday, to share a special message in the native language Malayalam.

While his heart was in the right place, Twitter's English translation wasn't.

"ഐശ്വര്യത്തിൻ്റെയും സമ്പൽ സമൃദ്ധിയുടെയും ഈ ചിങ്ങപ്പുലരിയിൽ ഏവര്‍ക്കും ഹൃദയം നിറഞ്ഞ ഓണാശംസകൾ #HappyOnam," li'l master wrote along with a graphic.

While an independent google translation of Tendulkar's message roughly meant this:

The translation done by Twitter told a different story. Twitter converted Tendulkar's wish into this: "Who cares ‍Happy Onam to all #HappyOnam."

Ironically enough, as seen above in the screenshot, microblogging site Twitter also uses Google as a tool to translate different languages used by user in a tweet.

Hawk-eyed Twitter users were quick to spot the apparent Twitter gaffe and responded to Tendulkar's tweet in amusement.

Meanwhile, to mark the occasion, Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his greeting on Twitter. “Greetings on Onam. This is a unique festival, which celebrates harmony. It is also an occasion to express gratitude to our hardworking farmers. May everyone be blessed with joy and best health,” the tweet read.

Indian skipper Virat Kohli too extended his wishes.

"Happy Onam to those who are celebrating the festival of harvest, harmony, love and peace.Ear of riceFolded hands #HappyOnam."
