Srinagar-Leh road closed after Chinese troop movement

SRINAGAR: Authorities on Monday closed the Srinagar-Leh road for civilian traffic after fresh Chinese military movements were seen near southern Pangong Tso Lake in the Union territory of Ladakh.
Vehicular traffic towards Sonmarg was stopped at Manigam in Ganderbal and at Sumbal-Sonawari in Bandipora. Only army convoys and vehicles carrying provision for soldiers are allowed.
Indian Army said People’s Liberation Army (PLA) soldiers were stopped after they made an overnight “proactive military movement” to change the status quo near Pangong Tso. The incident, as per the army, took place between August 29 and 30 in eastern Ladakh.
“PLA troops violated the previous consensus arrived at during military and diplomatic engagements during the ongoing standoff in Eastern Ladakh and carried out provocative military movements to change the status quo,” the army said in a statement.
“Indian troops pre-empted this PLA activity on the southern bank of Pangong Tso Lake, undertook measures to strengthen our positions and thwart Chinese intentions to unilaterally change facts on ground,” it added.
“A Brigade Commander-level Flag Meeting is in progress at Chushul to resolve the issues,” the statement further said.
