The Panaji District and Sessions Court awarded life sentence to accused Osban Fernandes and Ramesh Bagve for murdering a labourer Shivaji Nayak in 2013.
The District and Sessions Court had convicted the two accused in a double murder case recently, less than a month after the High Court of Bombay at Goa upheld their life imprisonment in the same offence. Osban Fernandes and Ramesh Bagve, accused of double murder in 2013 are also charged for sexually abusing an underage girl.
The court’s order came after concluding the final hearing into the infamous case that occurred at Merces and Anmod Ghat where the accused had also attempted to kill the deceased couple’s children. The duo had first killed his labourer Shivaji Nayak and later to hide the crime killed the victim’s wife and attempted to kill their children. The children survived and disclosed the case to the police. The victims, deceased husband (40), wife (35); and two minor survivors, son (8) and daughter (5) were all members of a Kolhapur native family.
The incident, which unfolded after the minor survivor spilled the beans to a passerby and subsequently to the police, had sent shockwaves through the State.
The Children’s Court had had earlier convicted Fernandes of Merces and Bagve from Sindhudurg and awarded them life sentences finding them guilty on four counts. The case dates back to May 2013, in which a husband-wife duo was murdered by two men and the High Court had upheld the verdict of the Children’s Court that sentenced two persons to life imprisonment in the 2013 double murder at Merces.
