A broken plastic speed bump at Lalbagh in Mangaluru city MANGALURU: An advocate from the city has served a notice to Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) for allegedly not clearing the broken plastic speed bumps that are posing danger to vehicles.
“The residuals of the plastic/ fibre speed-breakers and the sharp steel/ iron fixture, which were used to fix the fibre speed-breaker on the streets and roads are dangerously posing threat and hazard to the users of the road. The city corporation and its officials have miserably failed to discharge the statutory duty of timely maintenance and repair of the public streets and roads keeping in mind the safety of the users of such roads. It is very well known to all of us that the Indian Road Congress’ guideline shall be strictly adhered by the authorities while erecting the speed-breakers,” advocate Kumara Satyanarayana has stated in his pre-litigation notice.
These residual sharp objects found on the road/ streets not only pierce the vehicle tyres and make them burst, but also make the two-wheeler riders to lose control, leading to accidents. “As a resident of the city, I myself have been the victim twice — in March and August. The sharp residuals of the fibre speed-breaker (hump) or the steel/ iron nails used to fix the speed-breakers have pierced my car tyre twice at Lalbagh. The incident has cost me money and time,” he said.
Saying that a set of new tyres cost him Rs 9,000, the advocate has sought compensation for the loss and demanding immediate action by MCC. “I would also specifically mention here that this demand notice shall be construed as the pre-litigation statutory notice for all purposes,” he warned.
When contacted, MCC council chief whip and senior corporator from BJP said that he will bring the issue to the notice of officials in the engineering section. “I will alert the executive engineer. We will make necessary arrangements to remove such plastic bumps, which is not permissible as per rule, from all roads in the city,” he added.
