JEE Main and NEET: Parents, students gear up for exams
Many students are worried about possible risk of infection during the travel and appearing the examinations. Flood situation has added woes of students coming from flood affected areas.

BHUBANESWAR: Students and their parents in Odisha are getting ready for the JEE Main and NEET examinations amid the pandemic. Many students are worried about possible risk of infection during the travel and appearing the examinations. Flood situation has added woes of students coming from flood affected areas.
Though the state government has arranged free transportation and accommodation for the needy candidates appearing for JEE Main and NEET, some students who have chosen a different city as their examination centre may face difficulties to attend JEE Main between September 1 and 6 and NEET on September 13.
Subhadra Shukla, an aspirant from Berhampur in Ganjam district, said she had chosen Bhubaneswar as her examination city because she was preparing for these two entrance tests in Bhubaneswar. "Due to pandemic situation, I faced a lot of problem in Bhubaneswar and returned Berhampur. I thought transportation facility will be available by September, but now I don't know how to come Bhubaneswar and where to stay during this time," she added.
Shukla said she had contacted with an ITI institution about her problem, but they expressed their helplessness. She has to appear the JEE Main on September 5 and NEET on September 13. "There is no train or bus to come Bhubaneswar. I do not have private vehicle. The accommodation in the capital city is another issue. I have been preparing for these tests during last two years. I don't know whether I can appear the examination or not," she added.
Some parents are planning to take their children in their own or hired vehicles to examination centres to reduce physical contact with others during travel in public transport. They will also take homemade food with them for their wards.
"My daughter is appearing for both JEE Main and NEET in Bhubaneswar. It's a scary moment for both students and parents, but we have to take all precautions. I will take my kid to examination centre in my personal vehicle and also take homemade food for my daughter. Moral of the students is down and rhythm of preparation is also not up to the mark because of the uncertainty over the entrance examinations. Let's see what happens," said Benudhar Biswal, a parent from Pokhariput locality here.
Amaresh Behera, an aspirant from Baliapal in Balasore district, said his locality is affected by flood. "Some of my friends are staying in the villages severely affected by flood. I don't know about the government accommodation, but my father will take me to examination centre at Balasore in his motorcycle. As the roadside eateries are opened now, I will get food from there," he added.
Sanjay Kumar Singh, secretary of skill development and technical education department, said the government has arranged transportation and accommodation facility for the students. "They can stay at ITIs and engineering schools. If the canteen facility of the institution is functioning, students can get food on payment basis," he added.
