Tamil Nadu: 21-year-old medical student drowns in river in Thanjavur

THANJAVUR: A 21-year-old medical student drowned in Arasalaru River near Kumbakonam while taking a bath on Saturday evening. His body was recovered on Sunday.
The deceased has been identified as S Poovarasan, residing on Valluvar Street in Ammapettai near Kumbakonam in the district. His father Sivakumar is a mechanic at Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation's (TNSTC) Kumbakonam divisional office.
Poovarasan was a fourth-year MBBS student in China. Following the lockdown in China, Poovarasan was sent to India along with other students in March, 2020.
On Saturday evening, Poovarasan went to the river near his house to take a bath.
A strong current washed him away.
Other people at the spot tried to rescue him. However, they failed.
Fire and rescue service personnel were informed. An extensive search operation was conducted. Since it was late in the evening, they could not proceed with the search. They continued it on Sunday morning and found the medico’s body tangled in a bush a few meters away.
The body was retrieved and sent to Kumbakonam government hospital for a post-mortem.
Kumbakonam taluk police registered a case and inquiries are on.
