Top Union Ministry officials review measures to contain COVID-19 in UTs
- Union Home Secretary and Secretary, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) jointly reviewed the measures for containing the spread of COVID-19 infection in the Union Territories on Saturday.
- The union secretaries reviewed the measured for containing the spread of COVID-19 in Puducherry, Lakshadweep, Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu, in a meeting held through video conferencing on August 29.
- During the course of the meeting, senior officers of the UTs, briefed the Union Home Secretary about steps taken by them for testing management of COVID positive cases, isolation of COVID positive cases, availability of health infrastructure/medical personnel, para-medical staff, etc.
- The officials from the UTs were also asked to ensure that the medical workers and others in the frontline work in close tandem to contain the spread of the infection. They were also advised to ramp up COVID testing facilities, maintain effective surveillance for early detection of positive cases and other measures including, maintaining social distancing, sanitization, wearing of masks, etc.
China puts drones, laser tech on restricted export list amid trade tussle with US
Amid rising tension with the United States, China has included drones and lasers among the nearly two dozen technologies added to its restricted export list. On Friday, the ministry had said that 23 areas of innovation - ranging from space materials to 3D printing, encryption and large-scale high-speed wind tunnel design had been added to the restricted export list.
Assam minister, three more BJP MLAs test positive for COVID-19
Assam Hill Areas Development Minister Sum Ronghang became the first minister of the BJP-led state government to contract COVID-19, even as three more saffron party MLAs tested positive, officials said on Saturday. A total of 20 legislators have so far tested positive for coronavirus in the state.

NSUI's student Satyagrah demanding postponement of JEE, NEET enters day 5
- The indefinite hunger strike started by Congress' student wing, National Students' Union of India (NSUI), demanding postponement of JEE, NEET and other exams in view of the ongoing COVID-19 crisis entered day five today.
- NSUI, under the leadership of national president Neeraj Kundan, is demanding the Centre to postpone the exams keeping the rising number of COVID-19 cases in the country in mind.
- Earlier on Day 4, several Congress leaders visited the NSUI leaders at the protest site and extended solidarity and support to the protest. Pawan Khera, Nitin Rawat, Qazi Nizamuddin, Alka Lamba, among other prominent leaders visited the protest site yesterday.
70 children with AES at Muzaffarpur hospital; 56 discharged, 9 deaths reported
- Nine out of 70 children admitted to the Sri Krishna Medical College and Hospital (SKMCH) in Muzaffarpur due to acute encephalitis syndrome (AES) have died, the hospital said on Saturday.
- As per the hospital's report on August 29, a total of 56 children were discharged so far after recovering post-treatment from the hospital. Two children are admitted to the PICU in the hospital.
- Last year over 140 children died due to AES in the district. AES is a viral disease that causes flu-like symptoms such as high fever, vomiting and in extreme cases, brain dysfunction, seizure, and inflammation of the heart and kidney.
Canada scraps Covid-19 vaccine trial with Chinese pharma company
Canada has decided to cancel a coronavirus vaccine development agreement with the Chinese pharmaceutical company CanSino due to a delay in the shipping of drugs. According to the South China Morning Post, it is unclear if political tensions between the two countries had anything to do with the snag at the Chinese customs.

A 110-year-old woman recovered from COVID-19 and was discharged from Malappuram Manjeri Medical College on Saturday. The woman, Pathu, is the oldest survivor of the virus in the State. Before her, 105-year-old Asma Beevi of Kollam and 103-year-old Pareed from Ernakulam had recently recovered from the pandemic.
Lockdown imposed in Kota amid rising COVID-19 cases
A seven-day lockdown has been imposed in Rajasthan's Kota Municipal Corporation area from midnight of August 29 to September 6 in light of the rising cases of COVID-19, Ujjwal Rathore, Kota District Collector said.
3 terrorists, an Army personnel killed in Pulwama encounter: J&K Police
- Three terrorists and an Army personnel were killed in an encounter in Pulwama district on Saturday, confirmed the Jammu and Kashmir police. The encounter between security forces and terrorists broke out at 1 am on Saturday in the Zadoora area of Pulwama.
- Based on a specific input regarding the presence of terrorists in the village Zadoora area of Pulwama, a joint cordon and search operation was launched by police, Indian Army and CRPF in the said area.
- As the presence of terrorists got ascertained, they were given the opportunity to surrender. However, they fired upon security forces, which were retaliated leading to an encounter, said the Jammu and Kashmir police in a press release.
