Providence College has placed 17 students on “interim suspension” for violations of the school's COVID-19 Code of Conduct.

PC said Friday that "interim suspension" means the students are not allowed on campus until their disciplinary hearing, probably within 72 hours. They can’t attend classes in person when they begin on Monday, or participate in any campus activities.

The college did not say what the 17 students did.

“I am deeply disappointed by the selfish behavior of these students who defiantly chose to ignore our COVID-19 Code of Conduct,” the Rev. Kenneth R. Sicard, the college’ president, said in an email to students and parents. “This disregard for clearly defined protocols jeopardized the health and safety of others in our campus community.”

Father Sicard said the students placed on interim suspension might face further punishmment. “While I find no joy in having to endorse such strong sanctions,” he said, “I know they are necessary if we are going to have a successful fall semester.

“The Dean of Students and I have sent several written and video messages to students and families to warn of the significant consequences, including suspension or dismissal, for failure to comply with mandates currently in effect to keep our community healthy and safe. We have emphasized strongly that actions that endanger themselves and others during this pandemic will not be tolerated at Providence College.

“I know that, as a community, we are better than this.”
