Students’ body wants Assam University to defer final semester exam

SILCHAR: The Cachar district committee of the All India Democratic Students’ Organisation sent a memorandum to the vice chancellor of Assam University, Dilip Chandra Nath, seeking postponement of the final semester examinations scheduled for September owing to the Covid-19 situation of Assam.
The memorandum stated that it would not be safe for students to appear for the examinations physically in view of the increasing coronavirus cases here. “Apart from the pandemic, another reason to not conduct the examination at the university is that a large number of students belong from places outside Barak Valley and it might not be possible for them to travel during this pandemic for their examinations,” the memorandum added.
The organisation also demanded that the results of the examinations be declared on the basis of the students’ results in previous examinations and their performance in an online assignment on this semester’s syllabus — whatever has been completed before the lockdown came into force.
“If any student is not satisfied with this process, arrangements should be made so that he or she can appear for the examinations after the Covid-19 situation becomes normal,” the students’ organisation said.
The organisation had recently staged a demonstration in Silchar protesting against the government’s decision to re-open schools and colleges in the state from September 1.
They had said that it would be very risky to re-open educational institutions at a time when the number of coronavirus patients is increasing rapidly.
