Corona: Diabetes Patients at Higher Risk of Infection, New Research Reveals

Experts believe that patients with diabetes are at greater risk due to coronavirus. Blood glucose has been affected by the body of diabetes patients. The reason behind this is that they are not able to contact the doctors nor are they going to the hospital for fear of infection.

Drugs are not in compliance due to low income, insulin deficiency, glucose strips, and high weight gain. A paper from the Association of Major Indian Diabetics and Endocrinologists outlines five possible scenarios that recommend high sugar levels in Corona infection patients and an action plan to prevent complications and death.

Anoop Mishra, head of the Association of Experts, says that there is no fear of diabetes due to corona, but if someone has diabetes and is hit by a coronavirus, then there is a risk of serious illness, complications, and death.

One of the main reasons for the increase in the number of patients dying of Kovid-19 with diabetes is the ending of the T cells immunity. Mishra, the chairperson of the Fortis Center of Excellence for Diabetes, says that high blood glucose can be a result of recent weight gain or unexpected diabetes when hospitalized.

In many cases, it has been seen that people who do not have diabetes, complain of diabetes after having corona. There can be many reasons behind this, such as unhealthy eating, no exercise, steroid use, and mental problems.

Our research in Delhi shows that 40% of the people have gained weight during the lockdown, of which 16% have gained two to five kg in the 49-day lockdown. AIIMS professor of endocrinology Nikhil Tandon says that it is not uncommon for a patient to be diagnosed with diabetes during hospitalization.

Research says that improper use of dexamethasone in COVID-19 infection and other seasonal flu increases the risk of hyperglycemia. Also, hyperglycemia during pregnancy. On this, Mishra says that we advise pregnant women through teleconsultation to avoid labs and keep diabetes under control.

The fourth scenario affecting 90% of diabetic patients is to control diabetes when hospitalized due to pre-existing diabetes and its complications. The fifth scenario is the onset of diabetes, which is being reported more because of the corona. Because now S-2 (Ace-2) receptors are entering human cells.
