Why is Nepal so upset with the recruitment of Gurkhas in the Indian Army?

Nepal wants its recruitment for recruitment of Gorkhas in the Indian Army and even their deployment.

The Indian Army recruits around 1300 Gorkha soldiers every year. On the other hand, Gurkhas are also appointed in the British Army. They annually recruit 200 Gorkha soldiers in their army. Now Nepal is opposing the treaty under which these recruitments take place. According to him, due to this treaty, Nepal is facing many major losses. Now he wants his role in the selection of soldiers and even their deployment on the border.

Recent protests begin

In recent times, tensions between India and Nepal have deepened. He claimed his three regions of India. It is believed that he did this under pressure from China. Since China is investing heavily in them, internal politics is also in China's grip. Whatever be the case, but now Nepal is also opposing the appointment of Gurkhas in the Indian Army. Foreign Minister of Nepal Pradeep Kumar Gyawali spoke about reviewing the recruitment of Gorkha soldiers in the Indian Army.

What is the treaty between the two countries

In July, Gyawali, while talking to the Nepal Institute of International Relations, said that this agreement is a legacy of the past. But currently, nobodies. In fact, on July 30, 1950, after the British left, a three-party agreement on peace, friendship, and trade was signed between India, Britain, and Nepal. Under this, both countries gave almost equal rights to the citizens of other countries besides themselves. Even without a visa movement and jobs can also be done.

India's intention behind this treaty was that apart from the strengthening of the neighboring state, it was also important from a strategic point of view that Nepal was surrounded by high mountains, so better relations with Nepal were necessary. At the same time, Nepal continued to have considerable business benefits from India.

Wants a clear role in recruitment

The first big controversy over this treaty took place in the year 2018. Britain then talked about the recruitment of Gorkha women, for which they did not need permission from their country. According to a report by Scroll, in December 2019, Nepal raised its voice for this. He was worried that in this way the army of any country would take his people without the permission of the country.

Now Kathmandu wants the treaty to be discussed again. After this, with the permission of the same and through that, take the foreign army to the Gurkhas. Explain that the treaty that is in place at present does not have any role in the selection or recruitment of Nepal's soldiers.

China is also afraid

Gurkhas have been used in the struggle against states with which Nepal has diplomatic relations. India has used the Gorkha Regiment in every war including war with China (1962 and 1967) and Pakistan (1947, 1965, 1971, 1999). Although this is valid under the 1947 agreement, in present circumstances Nepal does not consider it right for itself. He is repeatedly afraid of spoiling his relations with China. Let me tell you that at present, the Gorkha soldiers of India are also stationed on the disputed borders with China and Pakistan. It is believed that Nepal does not want any dispute with China. That is why he wants to remove his Gurkha soldiers from the border.

Try to improve image

Apart from this, when the treaty was signed, then allegedly Britain and India also considered Nepal as a poor country. The recruitment of his people into his army was shown as a means of giving them employment. In the current circumstances, Nepal is feeling that due to this treaty, its image has become of poor and weak country. Whereas Gorkha soldiers are considered worldwide for their bravery. According to Gyawali, taking his people for their fight without asking the country is a colonial way and since Nepal is an independent country, it wants to reform the old treaty.

What India thinks

On the other hand, India's response to this case did not come as a major encouragement to Nepal. In a report by Economic Times, former Ambassador of India to Nepal Ranjit Rai believes that Nepal should do something thoughtfully in this matter. Whether or not you will be recruited in the army, how to be recruited, and how many Gorkhas can go to the foreign army, this is a different matter. Nepal can speak on this. But once they are recruited in the army, Nepal cannot tell on which border to keep them. He cannot decide whether the Gurkhas should be deployed on the borders of countries that have better relations with him.

How many Nepali Gurkhas are in the army at the moment

The Gorkha regiment in the Indian Army is known for its courage and refusal to give up. They have been found in many wars, from the Param Vir Chakra to the Maha Vir Chakra for bravery. According to the report of the Hindustan Times, at present, there are about 30,000 Nepali soldiers in the entire Gorkha regiment. It also has 120 officers. Apart from these, there are also Indian Gorkha soldiers from Dehradun, Darjeeling, and Dharamshala. The army has 6 Gorkha regiments in total. Apart from this, there is also Gorkha Rifles, which chose to serve in India after independence. Also, there are 79,000 Gurkha pensioners who retired from the Indian Army in Nepal.
