BROOKLINE — Brookline is modifying its face-covering order to require those who are medically excluded from wearing a mask or face covering to wear a plastic face shield instead. The new rule takes effect on Sept. 10.
Brookline's original face covering requirement was enacted in March, ahead of the statewide order.
“We are pleased with the level of cooperation with the existing face covering requirement,” said Brookline Health Commissioner Dr. Swannie Jett. “However, it is important to reinforce the need for a protective layer that limits the possibility of spreading the coronavirus — as a cloth face covering does — while ensuring people with medical limitations are protecting those around them from COVID-19 without jeopardizing their own wellness.”
In addition to those with medical exclusions for masks, the Brookline Health Department believes that masks are good alternatives for children and anyone who might claim they are unable to wear a mask while in public.
Noncompliance can be fined. So far, Brookline has not fined individuals but has fined businesses where customers or employees were found to be violating the order.
