The Supreme Court on Friday sought a response from the Central Government on a PIL seeking identification of minorities at the state level and issuing guidelines.

The petitioner, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and Supreme Court advocate Ashwani Upadhyay, in his petition said that 10 states have Hindu minorities and they should get minority status in those states.

The Supreme Court said during the hearing that he would look into the matter but before that he needed a response from the central government in this regard. A bench headed by Supreme Court judge Sanjay Kishan Kaul issued a notice to the central government seeking an answer in six weeks.

The petitioner has also challenged the validity of Section 2 (f) of the National Commission for Minority Education Institutions Act, 2004.
