Three VHP men arrested in Coimbatore for robbing woman of gold ornaments

COIMBATORE: Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) north district secretary M Saravanan alias Saravanakumar and two other VHP members were arrested by the Coimbatore rural police on Friday for attacking a woman at Kembanur and robbing her of 9.25 sovereigns of gold ornaments. The incident happened on June 25.
The police seized the gold ornaments and a motorcycle from trio.
The other arrested men have been identified as V Arumugam, 54, of Karamadai and K Ravi alias Ravindran, 25, of Vadamangalakarai.
Investigations revealed that Saravanakumar, a native of Mettupalayam, often conducted kangaroo court sessions along with a few VHP cadre. They dealt with assault and theft cases.
The victim, C Anitha, 46, of Kembanur is a schoolteacher at an elementary school in Pungampalayam and her husband, Chandrasekaran, 50, is engaged in agriculture. The couple’s son is working in the US.
On June 25, Saravanakumar and his two accomplices covered their faces with masks, entered Anitha’s home when she was alone there, assaulted her with a sickle and robbed of her gold ornaments. The trio escaped from the area.
Based on her complaint, the Karamadai police registered a case against them under sections 394 (voluntarily causing hurt in committing robbery), 397 (robbery or dacoity with attempt to cause death or grievous hurt) and 452 (house-trespass after preparation for hurt, assault or wrongful restraint) of the Indian Penal Code. All three were remanded in judicial custody.
Investigations revealed that Anitha’s husband had a land dispute with his elder brother, Nataraj, 80, of Kembanur. The case was pending before a court for many years.
Nataraj approached Saravanakumar and told him to assault his younger brother Chandrasekaran for involving in the land dispute. He also informed that his younger brother’s house had three CCVT cameras. Based on this information, Saravanakumar and his two accomplices covered their faces and entered Chandrasekran’s house.
Following their statement, Karamadai police arrested Nataraj on Saturday. He was also remanded in judicial custody the same evening.
“We plan to take Saravanakumar and his two accomplices under police custody for further inquiries,” said superintendent of police Ara Arularasu.
The SP added that people who were affected by Saravanakumar due to the kangaroo court can approach the police.
