Chennai: Gang hijacks lorry with Rs 1.5cr cigarettes, five men detained

CHENNAI: A six-member gang hijacked a lorry laden with 1.5 crore worth cigarettes near Sriperumbudur after attacking the lorry driver on Wednesday. The vehicle was found abandoned near Sholinghur on Thursday.
The hijackers took away the goods. Police have detained at least five suspects based on CCTV camera footage.
Police said the truck driver, Kumar, 30, a resident of Ranipet, was to deliver the consignment in Andhra Pradesh. They said the gang intercepted the lorry near Mannur Koot Road near Sriperumbudur by a car and five men on bikes attacked Kumar. Later, they hijacked the lorry holding Kumar at knifepoint.
Kumar blacked out after he was thrown off the vehicle near the regional transport office in Kancheepuram, police said. Later, he lodged a complaint at the Sriperumbudur police station.
A police team combed CCTV camera footage and found that the truck was headed towards Vellore.
