HYDERABAD: Chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao on Friday took another step towards staking total claim to PV Narasimha Rao's legacy by announcing that the state assembly would pass a resolution seeking Bharat Ratna for the former PM and renaming the arterial Necklace Road as PV Gnana Marg.

The CM has also decided to develop Laknepally village where Rao was born and Vangara where he grew up as major tourist spots. KCR said his government would urge Centre to rename the University of Hyderabad as PV Narasimha Rao Central University in recognition of his services to the nation, especially in the education sector. A resolution would be passed in this regard by the assembly, he said. "Renaming the UoH as PV Narasimha Rao Central University of Hyderabad will be a fitting tribute to Rao during his birth centenary year," he said. The assembly will also pass a resolution in the upcoming session urging the Centre to confer the Bharat Ratna on the former PM. At a review meeting with senior officials on PV birth centenary celebrations here, the CM said they would soon send a proposal to Unesco to confer awards in Rao's name on those who had made a mark in the fields of literature and science and technology. Telangana government would take care of the cash prize.
KCR instructed officials to develop the PV Gnana Marg with greenery all along the stretch and install Rao's idol there. On the proposed Rao memorial in Hyderabad, KCR said it would be built at international standards. "The memorial will showcase and reflect the great contributions made by Rao in various fields." CM said Rao centenary celebrations would be held worldwide. Arrangements are being made to conduct them in the US, Singapore, South Africa, Malaysia, Mauritius, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and other countries. "I will personally write invitations to the President, PM, former US president Bill Clinton, former British PM John Major, CMs of various states and request them to participate in the celebrations," he said. A portrait of Rao would be installed in the assembly. The government would also urge the Centre to erect his portrait in parliament, he added. It was decided to install his idol in Telangana Bhavan in Delhi.
It was also decided to bring out unpublished writings of Rao by the Telangana Sahitya Academy. A coffee table book on Rao's life would also be brought out, the officials said.
