Mumbai: Congress MLA Zeeshan Siddiqui files police complaint against news anchor for 'hateful remarks'

MLA Zeeshan Siddiqui hands over complaint to Mumbai police.
MUMBAI: Bandra East MLA Zeeshan Siddiqui on Thursday filed a complaint at Nirmal Nagar police station against a news channel and demanded its chief editor and anchor Suresh Chavhanke’s arrest for airing “communal and derogatory” content.
In his complaint, Siddiqui said that in a promo video of a channel’s show Chavhanke is seen making derogatory remarks against members of a community who qualify for the Civil Services exam conducted by UPSC. He also makes communal remarks against Delhi-based Jamia Millia Islamia University. The anchor tells his viewers that he would show a programme on Friday which would expose “UPSC jihad” and “Jamia Jihad”. “Such remarks cause communal disharmony. Such hate speeches should not be tolerated and Mr Suresh Chavhanke should be arrested and his social media accounts where he has put up the video should be suspended,” said Siddiqui.
An officer from Nirmal Nagar police said: “We received Siddiqui’s application on Thursday. We are looking into his complaint and our social media team is also scrutinizing the alleged news telecast. We will soon take a call on it.”
Meanwhile, responding to a petition from a group of students from Jamia Millia, the Delhi high court stayed the broadcast of the show of the news channel, which allegedly defames a community.
