Total Covid-19 cases in Tamil Nadu nears 4 lakh, with 118 deaths toll at 6,839

The cumulative case tally in Tamil Nadu neared four lakh on Wednesday with 5,958 new cases. The state reported 118 deaths, pushing the cumulative toll to 6,839. After the state discharged 5,606 patients on Wednesday, the recovery rate stood at 82%. At the end of the day, there were 52,362 people still under treatment.
Tamil Nadu reported its first case of Covid-19 on March 7 when a passenger from Muscat tested positive for the viral infection. On Wednesday, the state remained the worst hit after Maharashtra, which added 14,888 new cases that pushed its tally to 703,823. Maharashtra reached the four lakh mark on July 29, when its death toll was 14,463. TN’s case tally, which stands at 3,97,261, is set to cross four lakh on Thursday.

Officials at the state health department say the epidemic seems to have plateaued in August with an average of 5,823 cases and 112 deaths reported every day. The state added 1.51 lakh cases (38%) and 2,904 deaths (42%) in August. “But with more people going to work the cases are likely to increase. The only way to keep infection under control is active surveillance and early admission. More than anything else, we need people to wear masks and maintain social distancing. They should report to hospitals when they have abnormal symptoms,” health minister C Vijayabaskar said.
Chennai, the worst hit district, reported 1,290 fresh cases and 20 deaths on Wednesday. Chennai has 13,517 acti ve cases. Its three neighbours Chengalpet (294), Kancheepuram (329) and Tiruvallur
(280) together added 903 cases and 14 deaths. Together the region added 2,193 cases and 34 deaths. The seven other northern districts added 946 cases and 13 deaths. Cuddalore reported 286 cases followed by Villupuram with 189, Vellore 158 and Ranipet 121. While Kallakurichi had 78 cases, Tirupathur and Tiruvannamalai added 56 and 58 cases.
The western districts together added 1,277 cases and 27 deaths. While Coimbatore remained on top with 484 cases, recording a 21% jump overnight, Salem reported 451 cases, posting a 50% jump in new cases. Cases began to increase in Tiruppur, which logged 97 fresh cases. While Namakkal reported 70 cases, Krishnagiri and Dharmapuri reported 33 and 36 cases. Nilgiris reported four cases.
Along with cases, deaths also increased in the west. Coimbatore reported ten deaths, Salem eight, Erode five and Tiruppur three. The active cases in the region reached 9,047.
The ten southern districts together reported 906 cases and 29 deaths. Theni reported 184 new cases followed by Kanyakumari with 159, Tirunelveli 156, Tuticorin 105, Tenkasi 98 and Virudhunagar 79. The active cases in the district were 9,271 after 1,052 people were cured on Wednesday.
The eight central districts together reported 632 cases and 15 deaths. There are 5,446 active cases in the zone. Pudukottai (143), Thanjavur
(123) and Tiruvarur (105) reported cases in three digits, Trichy and Nagapattinam reported 83 and 84 cases. While Ariyalur reported 44 cases, Karur reported 32 cases and Perambalur had 18. There were six deaths in Thanjavur, followed by four in Pudukottai. Central zone had 5,446 active cases.
