Pune: Enough water in dams to meet needs for five months

Pune: Due to heavy rains in the catchment areas, the Pune city now has enough water for five months. From August 12 till now, water has been discharged into the Mutha river from Khadakwasla dam. Meanwhile, Khadakwasla, Panshet and Varasgaon dams are 100 per cent full while the Temghar dam has reached to 87 per cent water storage mark.

In all the four dams of the dam chain project which supplies water to the city, the total water storage is 28.69 TMC or 98.42 per cent. Due to rain in the catchment area of all the four dams during the day on Wednesday, 1054 cusecs of water was released from Khadakwasla dam through Mutha right canal and 856 cusecs. Water is being released from Varasgaon and Panshet dams for power generation.

Meanwhile, the heavy rains have showered in the catchment areas of all the four dams since the night of August 3. Therefore, by August 12, Khadakwasla dam was 100 per cent full. On August 17, Panshet and on August 24, Varasgaon dam were 100 per cent full. Water is being discharged from these three dams.

So far, 7.84 TMC water has been released from the Khadakwasla dam into the Mutha river. This water is further supplied to Solapur district and gets to Ujani dam on the border of the Pune district. As a result, there has been an upsurge of water capacity in the Ujani dam too.
