A man has been shot dead by police north of Brisbane.

Queensland police were called at midnight following reports of a disturbance between a man and a woman at a home in Dakabin in the Moreton Bay area.

Police were confronted by the man who was allegedly armed with knives.

One officer used their taser but it was ineffective and a number of shots were fired, striking the man.

The 27-year-old died at the scene.

The Queensland Police Ethical Standards Command is now investigating the confrontation.
