  • Each serve came to a total of $5 each, making it the perfect low budget meal

An amateur Australian home cook has shared how he made roast chicken and vegetables for two on a budget using only one pot and a bamboo steamer.

Mark, from Brisbane, shared the very easy recipe to the Simple Savers Facebook group where it was praised by others.

'Let's call this a "One Pot" (simple savers) wonder. All done in the steamer, dinner for two,' he said online.

Mark said he used frozen mixed vegetables, potatoes, sweet potatoes, carrot and roast chicken, which only came to a total of $5 per serve.

To save time and stovetop space, he used the bamboo steamer to cook the food on top of the pot.

Mark put the chopped root vegetables into a pot of water, then placed the chicken in the bottom compartment of the steamer and other vegetables in the second section on top.

As the water in the pot boils, the steam rises through the bamboo product and cook or heat the other food.

Bamboo steamers are commonly known as a healthy cooking alternative to ensure the meal remains nutritious and flavoursome.

The cooking product can be purchased from a range of retailers including Kmart and Amazon between $10 and $35.

As the steamer is made from natural bamboo, it's important to ensure it's lined with baking paper or lettuce leaves to ensure the flavours and smells from the food don't seep into the material.

'It's a go to old school appliance for us, takes up minimal space and is so versatile,' Mark said.

Other home cooks part of the Simple Savers Facebook group were impressed at the incredibly low cost of the meal.

Some who don't own a bamboo steamer asked if a slow cooker could be used as a substitute, though Mark wasn't sure as he hadn't tried this alternative idea.

HOW TO USE A BAMBOO STEAMER

Line the bottom of each tray with lettuce or cabbage leaves to prevent the food from sticking to the basket

Then add the food you want to cook in a single layer and make sure the top layer is covered with a lid

Make sure your steamer basket fits snugly in (or over) the pot and isn’t in danger of tipping over

Make sure the bottom layer of food sits above the water line in the pot and doesn't get submerged

Once the water is simmering, settle the steamer basket over the pot

Keep an eye on the water level and add more if the pot starts to go dry

Check your food periodically until it is done to your liking
