'No finger pointing': Seibold quits role with Brisbane Broncos
Brisbane Broncos coach Anthony Seibold has announced his departure from the role after a tumultuous period atop the NRL's biggest club.
Addressing media at the club's Red Hill headquarters on Wednesday morning, Seibold said the decision would take effect "immediately".
"Last week I made the decision to finish my tenure with the Brisbane Broncos," he said.
Seibold said questions of what he would do differently were not of consequence now and there was "no finger pointing" or "deflection of blame".
"Head coaching for the NRL isn't for the faint of heart, and I know that."
It comes after a tough 18-months for the coach, who has faced mounting pressure amid the team's poor performance during the disjointed pandemic season.
Seibold has also engaged police and lawyers to get to the bottom of rumours being circulated about his personal life, while the club battled breaches of the code's strict biosecurity rules.
The Broncos' largest private investor, Phil Murphy, compared the coach to a “cancer that needs to be cut out before the Broncos die” on Monday.
Speaking to this masthead on Tuesday, after agreeing to quit with at least three years left on his contract, Seibold said he had attempted to speak to Murphy afterwards but was hung up on.
