A driver was high on meth and cannabis when his car slammed into a Nissan Skyline and split it in two, killing a mother-to-be and her unborn child. 

Jesse Matthews, 23, admitted on Wednesday he was responsible for the horror collision at Mahogany Creek, east of Perth on May 15. 

Maddie Morgan, 21, was killed and her partner Jack Bryant, 23, was seriously injured. Their unborn baby Lucy was delivered but didn't survive.

Matthews pleaded guilty to a string of charges - including two counts of dangerous driving occasioning death - at Midland Courthouse in Perth, reported 7 News. 

He also pleaded guilty to one count of driving under the influence of drugs and  dangerous driving causing grievous bodily harm.

But the 23-year-old was allowed to walk free on bail, despite the charges against him amounting to a maximum penalty of 64 years behind bars.

Maddie's mother said even the harshest penalty won't be able to bring her daughter back.

He will be sentenced later this year.

Maddie's partner Jack Bryant miraculously survived the crash which claimed the life of his girlfriend and unborn baby on May 15.

Mr Bryant's Nissan skyline was torn in two when it was struck by a Ford Falcon with  Matthews behind the wheel. 

He described his horror after waking up from an induced coma at the Royal Perth Hospital a day and a half after the crash to learn his girlfriend and baby were dead.

'The first thing I do remember was seeing two of the police women that informed me about what happened,' he told The West Australian

'You don’t believe it at all. All the cliché things you can think of. It must be a dream, you are trying to wake yourself up.

'It’s just the biggest empty feeling you can imagine.'  

Mr Bryant was taken to Royal Perth Hospital with serious head injuries, a ruptured spleen, half a dozen broken ribs, collapsed lungs and a chip in his spine. He was discharged six days later. 

He urged motorists to do the right thing and avoid taking risks, warning they are not worth the potential consequences.
